Hownd have been producing ethical, cruelty free products since 2015. They started with their range of shampoos and spa products, which include a paw balm made from Candelila wax (a sustainable shrub) rather than bees!

Hownd want humans and dogs to embrace the power of plants and have launched a whole range of vegan food and treats for dogs.

If you are a vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian and would like to explore how your pooch can join you, read on as we answer some of the questions you may have about moving your dog onto a plant based diet.

Does my dog need meat for protein?

Dogs need protein to develop strong bones and muscles and maintain their immune system. They also need amino acids to fight infection and produce hormones.

Meat is a good source of protein and amino acids but they can also be found in plants such as peas, lentils, chickpeas, brown rice, hemp to name but a few.

Hownd's Complete wet Superfood contains pumpkin which is rich is vitamin A and high in anti-oxidants. Quinoa is gluten free and high in fibre and the Moringa plant is a natural prebiotic, keeping tummies healthy and reducing flatulence.

Next month they will be launching their superfood dry food which can be added to their wet food or mixed with your dog's current food for a flexitarian diet.

Will my dog be getting enough vitamins and minerals?

Plants can provide enough vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy, balanced diet for your dog. If your dog needs any extra vitamins for health reasons, then these can be added in the form of supplements.

Dogs also absorb vitamin D from the sun which they will get on their daily walks.

All Hownd food and treats contain hemp which is not just a high source of protein and amino acids but is also rich in Omega fats 3, 6 & 9.

Is it cruel to cut meat from my dog's diet?

We all want what is best for our pooches and providing them with a healthy diet is probably top of the list.

Feeding them a nutrient rich diet that suits them is the most important thing and your dog will let you know what they like and don't.

If you feel you want your dog to help you make a positive impact on the planet, you could introduce a plant-based diet slowly to their current food. You may decide to always feed a mixture or you may decide to switch totally to vegan. Every little helps!

You can further help by feeding them from one of Hownd's anti-bacterial bowls, made from recyclable polypropylene.
