Tucked away on Brick Lane, One Rice is more than just a cosy Chinese restaurant, it's a place where flavours bring you back to the warmth of home. For me, it was like stepping into a memory.

You see, Chaozhou is where my parents are originally from. The first bite of the Dongpo Pork with Osmanthus Flower has brought tears to my eyes from the nostalgia. It is the taste of home! The dishes here taste just like how my grandparents used to cook for us when I was little. There’s a certain soul in the cooking, a kind of authenticity you can’t fake, food that hugs you from the inside. If you’re ever craving something truly authentic, you don’t want to miss this hidden gem.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Eleven, the store manager, who told me the story behind the restaurant. It all started at the Up market in Brick Lane, where the team originally was one of the food stalls there. After receiving so much love and feedback from their loyal foodies, they opened their first sit-down restaurant in September 2024.

The heart behind this place is even more touching. The founder is a young woman who came to the UK for her studies and deeply missed the taste of home. She started cooking, testing and designing every single dish on the menu, determined to bring the comforting flavours of her hometown to people in London. Her passion and dedication shine through in every bite.
