  • Does Your Dog Suffer from Muscular Pain?

Dogs are active creatures by nature and don't always know their limitations! All that squirrel chasing or leaping in the air to catch a ball or even just jumping on and off the sofa puts extra strain on their muscles and joints and can even lead to painful injuries. • How to help your dog enjoy grooming

Most doggies will need to pay a visit to a professional groomer at some point in their lives and for many breeds this will become a regular experience. I've been a dog groomer for over 10 years and I'm going to let you into a secret, no dog in the world loves being groomed! They are away from you, their beloved humans, they are subjected to unusual and loud noises and asked to stand on a table for a couple of hours so there's little wonder it's not their favourite way to spend an afternoon. That doesn't mean that they have to hate the experience. Here are some top tips from 3 London dog groomers so you can help make a visit to the groomers more enjoyable for your pooch. #1. Start Them Young A visit to the groomers should be part of your pup's early socialisation. Even if your dog isn't ready for a haircut, the sooner they are introduced to the people, sights and sounds of a grooming salon, the better. "We have a 3 step introduction to grooming for pups up to 9 months old" Peter, D-O-G Grooming Studio, Wandsworth This is an excellent idea where your pup spends some time on their 1st visit just hanging around in the salon. On the 2nd visit, they are bathed and dried and on the 3rd they receive a full groom. For older dogs, you can apply a similar approach yourself. Just ask your groomer for advice. Trust me, they will be as keen as you are to make the process smoother! #2. Maintain their coats in between visits If left un-brushed, your dog's coat can become knotted or matted. They will then be subjected to the lengthy and sometimes painful process of de-matting and if that is something they associate with the groomers, then you can understand why they will be reluctant to return! This can easily be avoided if you make brushing part of their daily routine. In extreme circumstances, your groomer will have no option but to shave your dog short and that may not be your preference. So, if you want a fluffy dog then regular brushing is an absolute MUST! You can also get your dog used to be being bathed at home and noises like the hairdryer and hoover before going to a salon. "Your dog will be much happier at the salon if he's not terrified of the hairdryer" Anna, Dog and Groom, Wandsworth #3. Touch their legs and feet This is something that most dog owners don't ever consider. We stroke our dog's head, tickle their bellies, rub their backs but don't think about their legs and feet. Often, the first person to touch your dogs feet for any length of time will be their groomer. Understandably, this new sensation coming from a stranger can be hard for a dog to cope with. "One of the best things an owner can do for their dog is spend time touching their legs and holding their feet so this is not so much of a shock" Louanne, The Hound Hut, Oval Your groomer will be using clippers and sharp scissors on and around your dog's feet so it really helps if your dog doesn't react by jumping or pulling away. Spend some time stroking their legs and feet when they are relaxing next to you on the sofa. It's also a good idea to regularly check your dog's feet for anything stuck in between their pads which can become painful or even infected if left unnoticed. #4. Don't take a tired dog to the groomers Unlike a visit to the beauty salon for us, this is not a relaxing experience for dogs. Your dog will be at the grooming salon for at least 2 hours, most of which will be standing. They will be less happy about this if they have just been on a long walk and all they want to do is curl up in their bed and sleep! An over-tired dog is very much like an over-tired toddler, they can become extremely irritable and uncooperative. Sometimes, even aggressive! Your groomer will definitely appreciate that your dog has been to the toilet before arriving but that is all that is necessary. Why not take them for their walk afterwards as a special treat. #5. Finding the right groomer for you (and your dog) It is most owner's instinct to go to the groomers nearest to where they live. Though we understand the convenience of this, it is worth doing some research when looking for a groomer. If you find one who understands you and your dog, they are worth travelling for! One of the best ways is to ask your dog owning friends about their experiences and if they recommend a groomer. A good groomer will always put the health and welfare of your dog first, they will also want to meet your requirements as much as possible so that you become a loyal and long-standing customer. Before you decide, go and meet them and introduce them to your dog. Most professional groomers will be more than happy to do this and if they're not, then they are probably not the right place for you. Archie has checked out the following London salons and can personally recommend them all: The Hound Hut D-O-G Grooming Studio Dog and Groom

  • 6 places to enjoy National Burger Day

August 27th is one of our favourite days of the year as it's National Burger Day. The dish we inherited from our friends across the pond has come a long way since the days of Wimpy! Now you can get anything in a bun from kobe beef to beetroot and even without the bun for those on a no carb diet. As long as it's patty shaped, it's a burger! Some places will even create a special burger just for us doggies! Here are 6 dog friendly places to celebrate National Burger Day with your pooch! Smith & Whistle, Mayfair This swanky cocktail bar within the Park Lane Sheraton Hotel is so dog friendly that puppers even have their own menu of pooch friendly cocktails. We celebrated National Burger Day with them last year when they served up a special chicken burger for Archie! They also serve up a pretty mean burger for the humans complete with gruyere cheese and beer soaked onions. There is an extensive choice of beers and cocktails to wash it down with. The staff are super friendly and positively encourage lots of doggie pics being taken in the bar. Read Archie's review here... The Woolpack, Bermondsey This is a Young's pub on the very dog friendly Bermondsey Street. We love the relaxed vibe in this pub and look forward to going back in better weather when we can enjoy their great garden. The pub is split over 2 levels and dogs are allowed everywhere. The food is good old pub grub and the humans can get beef or veggie burgers, served with delicious triple cooked chips. As with all Young's pubs there is a good selection of beers and other drinks. Read Archie's review here... Gaucho, Hampstead and Richmond Gaucho is always a firm favourite for meat lovers, which, less face it, includes most pooches! Hampstead holds regular Doggie Sundays and Richmond is equally welcoming to pooches at all times. • 3 Dog Friendly Surrey Villages

If sitting by a duck pond and watching a cricket match on the green sounds idyllic to you, then there aren't many places that can beat a village in Surrey. I explored 3 quintessentially English villages which are not just great for making your Instagram feed look pretty but are also very dog friendly. Shere The beautiful village of Shere attracts visitors from all over the world thanks to the movies The Holiday and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, both of which were partly filmed here. The current absence of visiting tourists mean it's a bit quieter and easier to get a table at the cafes and pubs. The road running through the village can be very busy with cars and bikes and the pavements are narrow or non-existent so we pooches need to take extra care. Be sure to visit the beautiful church but don't waste any time trying to find the cottage from The Holiday because it was a fake one built just for the film! A must for all pooches is a visit to The Dabbling Duck. This village cafe, right next to the duck pond, serves breakfast and lunch every day. We sat in their spacious courtyard and the humans tucked into a full English - of course I tested the sausages and give them the paws up! They also have a sister restaurant, The Plucky Pheasant, on the outskirts of the village. The village is also home to two pubs, The William Bray and The White Horse which are both dog friendly. Cranleigh Our next stop was the village of Cranleigh, larger than Shere and with more shops but still very pretty and dog friendly. The department store Mann's welcomes us pooches and the concept store One Forty is well worth browsing. The road adjacent to the High Street is currently closed to traffic so the cafes have extra outside tables. When it comes to feeding the humans, Cranleigh has a plethora of cafes, many of which are dog friendly, including the Cromwell Coffee House. If you prefer a pub then The Richard Onslow is very spacious with a lovely rear garden and we dogs can even stay the night in one of their rooms if you want to stay a little longer (or the humans have too much wine to drive home). A definite must for the humans is Moooh! Ice Cream which is just off the High Street. Chiddingfold The tiny village of Chiddingfold has only 2 pubs and a handful of shops but it's the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle. Take a picnic and sit on the green, relax by the lily pond (blog main image) or watch a match on the nearby cricket pitch. If picnics aren't really your thing then head to one of the villages pubs, both of which are dog friendly. The Crown on the green is very popular. We had lunch at The Swan Inn which is quite large and has a rear garden with plenty of shade/cover. The humans described the food as decent pub grub and I made friends with the little girl on the next table who kept dropping bits of chicken for me! Those small humans have their uses sometimes! On this adventure Archie was kitted out in lead and collar by Overglam, bandana by Fred&Juno. His activity level was measured by PitPat - use code FOURLEGGEDFOODIES for £5 off your activity monitor. He was fuelled by Edgard & Cooper Busy Day Bar - use code FOURLEGGEDFOODIES for 20% off first order.

  • 6 Pub Gardens to enjoy this summer.

Our pubs are looking very different from when we last saw them and it may not be so easy to get a table plus your humans may still be a bit nervous of getting too close to other humans. If you prefer to remain outdoors this summer but still want to enjoy a great dog friendly pub, then you're in luck because many of London's pubs have fabulous gardens. The garden at the rear is large and enclosed - perfect for enjoying your after walk refreshments. All Young's pubs are re-opening on 20th July. Read Archie's full review here... Woolpack, Bermondsey Another Young's pub this time in the very dog friendly area of Bermondsey. When we visited in early March they were refurbishing the garden area so it should be even better when they re-open on 20th July. Kings Arms, Wandsworth The last of our Young's pubs in this blog is The King's Arms which is on a very busy junction in Wandsworth but the garden at the rear is an absolute oasis of calm. As you can see there is plenty of space for more than one dog. Red Lion, Barnes This Fullers pub in beautiful Barnes not only has a fantastic garden with loads of space but it is also home to The Great British Sausage Roll Off every February. They often have BBQ's in the garden and the food is always good. They are open and waiting for you! Read Archie's review here... The Garden Shed, Wimbledon This Kiwi pub in Wimbledon has a really pretty rear garden with plenty of space and comfortable seating - tried and tested by Archie! Read his full review here...
