Why Luca thinks all dogs should have a shoot with Amie I wanted a professional photograph of Luca to celebrate his 2nd birthday, and a friend recommended Amie Barron Photography. She had attended one of Amie’s pop-up sessions and was delighted with the experience. The photographs were beautiful and after learning about Amie’s passion for the ethical treatment of animals in the media, I knew I had found my photographer. I opted for a studio session as I wanted a very clean and simple aesthetic. I was also aware that this would be Luca’s first time being photographed in a professional environment and I wanted him to feel safe and at ease. There was no need to worry because the session was wonderful. Before taking any photographs, Amie made sure Luca was comfortable with the camera flash and surroundings. During the shoot the atmosphere was very fun and playful, and Luca was in his element. It was at this time that I discovered that my little Luca was a very big poser.   After a successful photoshoot, I was very excited to see the results. Amie certainly didn’t disappoint. The images were gorgeous and there was great variety in Luca’s facial expressions and body positions. I think Luca is very photogenic, but Amie captured a quality in him that is difficult to describe and must be seen to be believed. The challenge was selecting which images to choose as they were all incredible. It was a difficult task, but I am so grateful to have the most stunning images and memories of Luca that I will treasure forever. Since Luca’s first photoshoot with Amie, we have attended several of her Woof About studio sessions and had an outdoor photoshoot. Amie’s outdoor sessions take dog photography to the next level. The images are like works of art. The backgrounds are striking, but it is always the dog that is the star.   I personally cannot praise Amie enough. She has such a wonderful relationship with the dogs she photographs that it is no surprise she captures magical moments with every click of her camera. Amie loves dogs, and they love her. I know Luca can’t wait to see her again soon. As a dog photographer in London, I know that every dog has a unique personality, and that’s what makes their photos so special. If you’re looking to take pictures that feel as heartfelt as your bond, here are some tips to make your images stand out. And you don’t need the fancy gear to do it! Train Your Dog to Look at the Camera Getting your dog to look directly at the camera can feel like a challenge, but with a bit of training, it’s totally achievable – and ethical, of course! You can use your phone’s shutter sound as a clicker to grab their attention and reward them with treats. Here’s how: Turn up the volume on your phone’s camera shutter sound. Take a random photo and immediately reward your dog with a treat. Gradually progress to moments when they’re sitting still and making eye contact before rewarding them. With some repetition, your dog will associate the shutter sound with treats, making it easier to capture those perfect moments. Remember to keep sessions short and fun to maintain their enthusiasm. Capture Their Lives Your dog’s story is about more than just them – it’s about where they love to be. Whether it’s their favourite park in London, a cosy corner at home, or the streets they explore daily, incorporating their surroundings adds narrative to your photographs and they almost become a visual journal of you and your dog's lives together. Try This: Photograph your dog during your routine walk. Capture their paws on the pavement, their nose in the grass, or their silhouette against the London skyline. These moments tell a bigger story about their life with you and are moments that may seem small right now, but are something you will look back to with fondness. Think Beyond the Sit Some of the best photos are the ones that break the rules. Instead of aiming for a perfectly framed sit, experiment with unexpected angles or compositions. Lay on the ground for a dog’s-eye view or focus on the little details – their wagging tail, floppy ears, or muddy paws. Capture every single thing about them so you can always look back on your photos with a smile. I always tell my clients not to worry because the photos where their dogs aren’t sitting are always the best ones!  It's Not All About The Sun Lighting can transform an ordinary photo into something extraordinary, and personally, I'm not the sun's biggest fan! To make the most of natural light: Golden Hour Magic:  Shoot during the golden hour – the hour after sunrise or before sunset – for soft, flattering light that adds warmth and depth to your photos. Window Light for Indoors:  If you’re shooting inside, position your dog near a window to take advantage of natural light. Avoid overhead lighting, which can cast unflattering shadows. Overcast Days Are Your Friend:  Don’t shy away from cloudy days. Soft, diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and creates a beautifully even tone across your dog’s fur. Experiment with how the light interacts with your dog’s features. Sometimes, backlighting (placing the light source behind your dog) can create a dreamy silhouette or halo effect around their fur.) Focus on Connection The best dog photos aren’t just about the dog – they’re about the relationship you share. Include yourself in the frame, even if it’s just your hand reaching out for a touch or your shadow walking beside them. These moments highlight the bond and make the image feel deeply personal. After all, you're the biggest part of your dog's story. As much as we all love a stunning photo, your dog’s comfort and happiness should always come first. Take breaks, keep sessions short, and never force them into situations that make them uneasy. Dogs thrive when they feel safe, so let that be your guiding principle. Remember: The best photos aren’t perfect – they’re authentic. They show your dog exactly as they are, and that’s what makes them so magical. A Lovely Weekend at The Pheasant Inn Baxter and I recently stayed at The Pheasant Inn in Berkshire. Tucked away in Shefford Woodlands, this charming country pub with rooms is the kind of place where you immediately feel welcome. Surrounded by rolling countryside and just minutes from the M4, it feels both peaceful and accessible, making it an ideal choice for a short escape. The inn itself has all the character you would expect from a historic coaching inn. Exposed beams, open fires and thoughtful touches in the décor give it plenty of atmosphere. It manages to balance the cosiness of a village pub with the comfort of a boutique hotel, which makes it equally appealing for a quiet drink by the fire or a longer weekend away. From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. Our room was warm and inviting, with soft furnishings and country-inspired styling that instantly felt relaxing. Waiting for Baxter was a Happy Dog Hamper from The Canine Menu, complete with chews and tasty treats to keep him busy during our stay. It was such a thoughtful welcome and immediately set the tone for a dog friendly visit where Baxter was just as important a guest as I was. Dinner in the pub did not disappoint. The lamb was beautifully presented and full of flavour, and the sticky toffee pudding was rich, indulgent and the perfect way to finish the meal. While I enjoyed my food, Baxter was treated to his own puppuccino from the dedicated puppuccino bar. Seeing him included in the dining experience was a highlight of the evening, and it really underlined how much care the team puts into welcoming dogs as part of the family. After a restful night’s sleep in our comfortable room, we made our way down for breakfast. The morning menu offered a variety of choices and I opted for smashed avocado on sourdough topped with poached eggs. It was fresh, filling and beautifully prepared. Baxter, never one to be left out, happily settled down with one of the buffalo chews from his hamper. Sitting together while I enjoyed my coffee and he worked through his treat was the perfect start to the day. What really stood out throughout our stay was the friendliness of the staff. They were warm, attentive and always ready to make a fuss of Baxter. Nothing felt like too much trouble, and that level of hospitality made the experience feel special. It was more than just an overnight stay; it was a chance to properly relax, switch off and enjoy time together in a setting that felt both homely and indulgent. We weren’t quite ready to head home after checking out, so we took advantage of the inn’s location and made a stop at Avebury Stone Circle before beginning our journey back. I’ll be sharing more about that in my next post. A peaceful Essex escape https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ Baxter and I recently spent a couple of nights at Swallows Field Glamping Pods in Essex, and it was exactly the sort of relaxing countryside break we both needed. Peaceful, dog friendly, and beautifully designed, it offered the perfect mix of comfort and fresh air. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ Swallows Field is a small, adults only glamping site located just outside Colchester. With only three pods in total, each one has its own large, fully enclosed garden and is spaced out enough that you really feel like you have the place to yourself. Every pod comes with a private patio, outdoor seating, a fire pit, and lovely countryside views. Ideal for quiet mornings, sniffy strolls, and evening lounging. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ We visited with two other friends and hired all three pods, which made the whole experience feel extra special. Their dogs came too, so having the entire site to ourselves meant plenty of space for the pups to roam safely, and it created a really relaxed, private atmosphere. We hired a hot tub for the duration of our stay, which was set up just outside our pod. It was such a lovely treat to be able to unwind whenever we wanted while Baxter and his pals supervised from the patio. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ Inside, the pod had everything we needed. A proper double bed, an ensuite shower, a fully equipped kitchen with oven, hob and fridge freezer, and a little dining area. There was even a sofa, which Baxter wasted no time claiming as his own. The layout made great use of the space, and everything was spotless and thoughtfully done. It felt like a real home away from home. One of the nicest touches was the dog welcome pack waiting for us. Baxter had his own towel, water bottle, and a little stash of treats. It was such a lovely way to start the stay and showed just how dog friendly the site really is. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ The location is great if you want to explore. The site is right next to Fordham Heath, which has plenty of woodland paths, and it’s only a short drive from Constable Country, Colchester Castle, and some lovely pubs. There are also several dog friendly beaches nearby, including Frinton on Sea, Walton on the Naze, and Mersea Island. From Frinton to Walton: A Seaside Walk Worth Sniffing Out https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ We headed to  Frinton-on-Sea  with Baxter and a couple of his pals, thinking we’d just have a gentle stroll along the beach — but it turned into one of the best walks we’ve done in a while. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ We started near  Frinton Golf Club , where the northern end of the beach is dog friendly all year round. The sand was soft, the tide was out, and the dogs couldn’t wait to get moving. Within seconds they were tearing across the beach, tails up, ears flying, paws already coated in salt and sand. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ Eventually, we reached the stretch of beach where dogs aren’t allowed (seasonal restrictions apply, and it’s clearly signposted), so we popped up onto the  promenade  and continued the walk there. It’s a lovely, wide path lined with colourful beach huts and plenty of space for strolling with a lead on. Baxter took his job very seriously, inspecting every bench and railing as we passed. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ As soon as we reached the next dog-friendly section, we hopped back down onto the sand and carried on towards  Walton-on-the-Naze . There was so much to explore, groynes to climb, seaweed to sniff, stretches to zoom across , and the beach stayed calm and quiet the whole way. It’s one of those routes where there’s always something new to see, and the dogs were in their absolute element. https://www.instagram.com/baxter.beagle.2021/ Frinton has such a calm, relaxed feel. There are no noisy arcades or crowds, just pastel huts, open space, and the gentle soundtrack of the sea. It’s the sort of place that’s easy to overlook but well worth the visit, especially with dogs in tow. Need to Know Location : Frinton-on-Sea to Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex Dog Restrictions : Dogs are not allowed on the main Frinton beach from 1 May to 30 September. The northern end near the golf club is dog friendly year-round Walk Details : We walked 8.82 km return (just over 5.4 miles) from Frinton Golf Club to Walton Pier and back. You can walk along the beach where permitted or follow the promenade through the restricted zones. Toilets and Bins : Public toilets and dog waste bins are available near the beach huts Parking : We parked near Frinton Golf Club, where there’s free on-street parking just a short walk from the beach. Perfect Pet Portraits https://www.instagram.com/skyegsd23/ We recently had a portrait commissioned of Skye from Emma Simpkins. Emma is so lovely, she can be found on her website where you can also find her social media links too. She is based in London where she attends many stalls to showcase her work, but she also has commissions open for people further afield too where she will then post your pet portrait to you. My experience with Emma was remote based, we mainly communicated via email where she asked for a high resolution photo of Skye she could use for her portrait. As she can only work from what you give her, so as much detail that is available in these photos, the better results she can provide for the finished drawing.  Usually a £50 deposit is required to secure your booking and Emma will give you a timeframe of when you can expect your portrait. These portraits are usually A4 and a head/shoulders drawing, however Emma is happy to work around you with what you would like.
